100% Electronica is a re-design of the 2015 album by George Clanton. I chose to redesign this album because I felt that the original design and branding was too simple for the album (it is literally just a mirror selfie of Clanton), as the album features complex and layered production. The ultimate goal of this redesign was to create a new, cohesive visual system that was complementary to the sonic qualities and feeling of the album.
The original cover is shown to the left.

Who is George Clanton?
George Clanton is a 34-year-old electronic musician mostly known for his involvement in the vaporwave genre. Prior to releasing music under his name, he put out an album under the name Mirror Kisses and later under the name ESPRIT 空想, before ultimately putting out 100% Electronica on September 25, 2015, under his given name. Also in 2015, Clanton started the record label 100% Electronica with his girlfriend, another musician who goes by Neggy Gemmy (FKA Negative Gemini), and later went on to launch the first vaporwave music festival, Electronicon.
Clanton's musical style is known for its fusion of genres, incorporating elements of electropop, trip-hop, shoegaze, grunge, acid house, and vaporwave. He is quoted saying he prefers "to write songs that are representative of an emotion he feels when singing", which differs from most vaporwave artists as they tend to use more ironic and silly lyrics.

Once I had settled on the album, I decided to listen to it front to back a few times to get more acquainted with it. During this process, I took notes on each of the songs, specifically on themes, lyrics, emotions, textures, colors, and shapes that came to mind while listening.

After taking some notes and coming up with a few concepts, I began to moodboard in order to further solidify my concepts for the redesign. I was extremely drawn toward wiring, the relationship between technology & the natural world, and electronic music equipment.
More Extensive moodboard:

Once I had established a base concept from moodboarding, I then began the process of sketching. I focused on creating interesting compositions with the imagery of wiring, electronic instruments, computers, and circuitry.
After completing a series of sketches and settling on an idea to move forward with, I began to digitize & finalize my album design while also creating the other components for the visual system, including a vinyl packaging assets, a tour poster, spotify assets, and a social good component incorporating social media.
